WA FIRST: HAWAIIAN TO DELIVER LANDMARK COMMUNITY PRECINCT

17 Jun 2026

Hawaiian is set to redefine the role of neighbourhood shopping centres in Western Australia, with plans approved for a landmark outdoor community precinct at Hawaiian’s Newpark, to be known as Hawaiian’s Newpark Community Corner.

Covering 760 square metres, the precinct is anchored by a public basketball court and an immersive Firewise Garden, featuring nature play elements such as a slide, water play, sandpit and other interactive features.

A first for WA shopping centres, the project sets a new benchmark for community-led placemaking.

Transforming an underutilised area adjoining the centre, Hawaiian’s Newpark Community Corner has been shaped by direct community feedback and delivered in collaboration between Hawaiian, the City of Wanneroo, The Forever Project and Firewise.

Hawaiian Chief Operating Officer Beau Waters, who oversees the company’s Community Impact initiatives, said the development reflects a meaningful shift in how shopping centres can better serve their communities.

“This is not a traditional retail development. It’s a space designed entirely around community connection. Hawaiian’s Newpark Community Corner sets a new benchmark for how shopping centre environments can support everyday social interaction, wellbeing and recreation,” Mr Waters said.

“Bringing together a community basketball court with a Firewise garden creates something genuinely unique. It will be a place where people can be active, gather and spend time together in a way that goes far beyond shopping.”

“As a WA-owned business, we’re proud to invest in spaces that strengthen community wellbeing and create more meaningful places for people to connect,” Mr Waters added.

Hawaiian’s Newpark Community Corner is a new initiative that will inform future community-led projects across Hawaiian’s portfolio, demonstrating how neighbourhood centres can integrate accessible, free public amenity into their offering.

With Development Approval now secured and strong support from the City of Wanneroo, the precinct is set to become a key recreational and social destination for the local community.

City of Wanneroo Mayor, Linda Aitken said the City was a strong supporter of projects that bring people together to connect and enjoy their local area.

“It’s spaces like these that help create a stronger sense of belonging and make our neighbourhoods more vibrant and welcoming,” she said.

“This will become a real asset for residents and visitors and something the community can be proud of.”

“Given fire safety is of the highest priority to the City, it’s wonderful to see a Firewise Garden included in this space.”

The project builds upon Hawaiian’s continued investment in Hawaiian’s Newpark, following the recent introduction of its alfresco dining precinct and broader centre upgrades focused on strengthening connectivity, accessibility and community use.

The project is expected to start on site in June 2026, with completion anticipated in September 2026.
