1,000 Lives Changed Together with the McGovern Foundation

May 2026 marked a significant milestone for our partners at the McGovern Foundation. 1,000 Wanderer Program participants have now achieved their driver’s licence since the program launched in 2021.

It’s an occasion worth celebrating, not just for the number, but for the people behind it and the stories it represents. Each licence reflects a journey of confidence gained, opportunities opened, and meaningful progress for those who may otherwise have faced significant barriers.

It also speaks to the strength of a program addressing a very real challenge – access – and the collective effort behind it.

The Wanderer Program

For many people, getting a driver’s licence is a routine milestone. For others, barriers such as access to a vehicle, supervised driving hours or ongoing support can make it difficult to begin, or to finish.

Through the Wanderer Program, the McGovern Foundation is changing that. By providing mentoring and supervised driving, the program supports people who might otherwise miss out, helping them build the skills, confidence and experience needed to achieve their licence and unlock greater opportunity.

At its core, the program is about more than driving. It’s about creating pathways, removing barriers, building relationships, and supporting people to reach a milestone that can reshape what’s possible in their day-to-day lives.

A Valued Partnership

Three years ago, Hawaiian partnered with the Foundation on the Wanderer Program, united by a shared commitment to creating stronger communities. Since then, the program has continued to grow in reach and impact, all made possible by the dedication of the Foundation’s team, volunteers, participants and supporters.

While reaching 1,000 licences in five years is a significant achievement for the Foundation and those who have completed the program, the impact extends far beyond the individual. A driver’s licence can unlock access to employment, education and essential services, supporting greater independence and stability. It also strengthens connections to family, community and opportunity, with each outcome contributing to more connected and resilient communities.
