With countless parents getting their children ready to head off to school for the year, Hawaiian is working with their partner, Seedlings to help their shoppers prepare with more than just new school bags and lunchboxes this month.
Understanding that fourteen percent of youth between the ages of 4 to17 are faced with mental health or behavioural problems¹, Hawaiian engaged with The Seedlings Program to provide assistance to a number of local schools. The WA property group has now decided to extend this support, bringing it into their shopping centres to help parents and children deal with the anxiety that often comes with starting or returning to school.
Di Wilcox, founder of The Seedlings Program, said the workshops will help both parents and children by providing the skills and strategies to navigate through commonly occurring situations so that they don't feel helpless or hopeless.
“It may be their first year, a new school, or maybe they are just a little shy, but for whatever reason it is important that we equip our children at a young age to deal with challenges they may face in or outside of school.”
Forming part of their broader community program, Hawaiian CEO and Director, Russell Gibbs said he feels it’s important for young families to have access to programs such as Seedlings.
“We see the back to school rush every year and the pressure and anxiety that comes with that. By providing these programs to our shoppers, we see it as a small investment in our youth and their development.”
During January, Hawaiian will bring The Seedlings Program into their shopping centres to run two free workshops for children and parents to get ready; one for those starting school and for those a little older returning to school.
